GeoComputation: A Coordination-Oriented Approach

چکیده
Introduction During the past several years the research under the banner of “GeoComputation” has been developed in an open and diverse manner, with a wide range of techniques and application domains been addressed from various perspectives. While plurality and inclusiveness have been regarded as the strength of GeoComputation (Gahegan 2000), however, the diversity of expertise (which is usually very specialized) required to understand the proposed tools and the heterogeneity introduced by different tool providers have became major barriers to the successful application of GeoComputation in real world problem solving, especially when the targeting problem requires various tools and techniques to integrate and work as an analytical whole. This raises interesting interoperability issues that are not just about the sharing of data, but also related to the integration of problem solving knowledge in a much broader sense, including how to make methods accessible to domain users who are not technical experts, how to share functionalities between different tools, and how to capture and maintain consistency when knowledge are transferred between systems and subjects.

The Integration of Geographic Visualization with Knowledge Discovery in Databases and Geocomputation
This paper details the research agenda of the International Cartographic Association commission on Visualization: working group on Database-Visualization links. The paper stresses the need for the closer integration of three largely disparate technologies: geographic visualization, knowledge discovery in databases and geocomputation. The introduction explains the meaning behind these terms, the...
متن کاملThe GIS revolution, are we ready for GeoComputation?
This paper examines the argument that the GIS revolution has run its course. An approach is used that focuses on describing requirements rather than finding new roles for increased processing power. Results of a survey of resource management practitioners are described. A prototype system, SPMS is also described which was developed from a position of information requirements. The system is show...
متن کاملIncreasing GeoComputational Interoperability: Towards a Standard GeoComputation API
The progress of GeoCompuation research has brought us a rich set of effective computational methods for solving geospatial problems. To increase the interoperability of these methods, we have to deal with the diversity and heterogeneity ingrained in the plurality and inclusiveness of GeoComputation. Current GeoComputational interoperability research mostly focuses on interoperability issues rel...
متن کاملAdvances in geocomputation (1996-2011)
1. What is geocomputation? The first international conference on 'Geocomputation', hosted by the School of Geography at the University of Leeds in 1996, launched a new research agenda in geographical analysis and modelling (Openshaw & Abrahart, 1996): ''The art and science of solving complex spatial problems with computers'' (GeoComputation, 2012). The interest generated in this field was estab...
متن کاملGeoVISTA Studio: A Geocomputational Workbench
One barrier to the uptake of Geocomputation is that, unlike GIS, it has no system or toolbox that provides easy access to useful functionality. This paper describes an experimental environment, GeoVISTA Studio, that attempts to address this shortcoming. Studio is a Java-based, visual programming environment that allows for the rapid, programming free development of complex data exploration and ...
